What would I use to select where the price has been trending up for lets say the last year (will want to vary this period)?

Generally speaking, it depends on your definition of price trending up. There are dozens of ways to express it with indicators. In case you don't know, there is a synonymous criteria under "Moving Average" in the Rule Wizard ("MA is trending up/down"). MA with period = 1 is equal to price.
